Anne's design is coming along great! I have decided on the final look - the 4th in this image: I like how adventurous she looks! Shorts, t-shirt and hair out of the way but still cute shoes with stars on them. Always comfy though! Anne's t-shirt design is the one featured on the front page of the website. On another note, this month is Mermay, where artists who chose to take part draw a mermaid every day. The last couple of days, I have been drawing some more horror themed mermaids and they are giving me some great ideas for the game! So here is one of them, with spoopy light effects and all!

It's been a while since I posted but I have been working on the concept art. I started with the design of one of the girls, Lyra. Here is the first doodle I did in my sketchbook and I really liked how young and innocent she looks, so based it on this one drawing The first step into translating this into a design was pinning down her personality. Lyra is friendly and always smiling. She is the youngest in the group and the best way to describe her would be cute and endearing. On the other hand, she has a mischievous side others rarely see. Working on her looks, I wanted to give Lyra that appearance of innocence, giving her almost doll-like features that also reflect her young age. While I tried a few different hairstyles, I decided on short and curly for playfulness Final design:
Colour will play a big part in the comic. I want it to reflect the mood of each situation so I am exploring different options and putting together a colour script:
I mentioned the story is about three girls and they are the main characters. I am not a writer and with this being my first time creating something like this from scratch, I am afraid generic horror themes won't be avoided (at the end of the day, I like them) but what I don't want is generic characters. The girls are in their early teens but I feel teenagers are a lot more three-dimensional than they are portrayed a lot of the time. My (horrible) experience as a teenage girl will hopefully come in handy too. I have been making notes on the characters' personalities I am using throughout the whole designing process. And while on the train for a work trip, I got time to even sketch them! I am not 100% happy with them though so will be re-working parts of the designs.
In the photo, you also get a sneak peek at one of the other characters At the start of 2016, I made a New Year's resolution to create a game. Life got busy and so did work so it never happened... And as much as I love working on so many different projects with my freelancing, I want to create something that's my own. So, I thought If I don't start now, I may never do it. And here we are! I have had a few ideas for a while now but I am very tired of leaving personal projects to die a slow death due to lack of free time so starting small, with realistic goals and no pressure. As I am working around other projects, I am thinking of creating a small "demo" first, and then going from there. But what is the game? I am a huge fan of the horror genre and watch so many horror films that it made sense. I do admit, I am not strong enough to play 3D horror games but I feel 2D ones are a different kind of horror and the whole experience is so different. And it is definitely an experience I enjoy! Once I had the genre, the story kind of flew out of my head on a piece of paper and I kept developing it. Now I have a very good idea where I'm going and have already started designing the characters. I also generally don't call it a game when talking to people but an interactive comic. More on why I do that when I figure it out... A (very brief) summary of the Story
The story is about three girls who meet up for a sleepover and decide to play a game of Truth or Dare. After that, the possibilities of where that goes is really up to the player. |
